New malware called Styx Stealer steals data and can reroute crypto transactions to the bad actor’s wallet

• Styx Stealer, a new malware, has been discovered that can steal a wide range of data, including cryptocurrency, through a method called clipping. It exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Defender that was patched last year, making it harmless to users with an up-to-date operating system.

• Styx Stealer is available for rent on the developer's website, with pricing and features initially displayed on styxcrypter.com before being replaced with information about another product. It can be purchased using various cryptocurrencies, and the developer has received around $9,500 in crypto payments in the first two months of its operation.

• According to a report by Chainalysis, legitimate cryptocurrency activity is growing faster than illicit activity, although the value of stolen crypto has increased due to the price recovery of Bitcoin. The number of hacking incidents in 2024 has only marginally increased year-on-year.
