El Salvador’s ambitious Bitcoin City project, announced by President Nayib Bukele in 2021, was envisioned as a futuristic, tax-free crypto hub powered by geothermal energy from the Conchagua volcano. But years later, signs of actual development remain scarce.
A visit to the proposed site revealed little more than untouched land, dense forests, and remote beaches. No major construction is visible, and the southeastern face of the volcano—where Bitcoin City is supposed to rise—remains largely undeveloped.
However, 30 minutes away, near the town of La Unión, construction of a new airport is underway. Some speculate it could be connected to Bitcoin City, possibly laying the groundwork for future investors and residents.
While skepticism grows, infrastructure projects in the region suggest Bukele’s vision isn’t entirely abandoned. Whether Bitcoin City materializes or remains an ambitious dream is still uncertain. Show Less
