Indian National Is Sentenced To Prison For $20 Million Dollar Fraud Scheme Involving Fake Cryptocurrency Exchange Websites

Chirag Tomar, a 31-year-old Indian national, has been sentenced to 5 years in U.S. federal prison for his role in a $20 million crypto laundering scheme. From October 2021 to March 2023, Tomar ran a fake Coinbase Pro website, stealing login credentials and two-factor authentication codes from victims. The stolen funds were then laundered through a network of crypto wallets and exchanges.

Tomar used the proceeds to fund a lavish lifestyle, purchasing luxury cars like a Lamborghini Urus and Porsche 911 Carrera S, along with expensive watches and international travel. Hundreds of victims were targeted in the scheme, leading to significant financial losses.

Tomar was arrested in December 2023 upon entering the U.S. and pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering. Authorities highlighted the case as a warning about the dangers of phishing scams in the crypto space, urging users to verify platforms carefully before entering sensitive information. Show Less
